About Co-operation Housing
Co-operation Housing Ltd (CH) is a small Tier 1 registered community housing provider based in Fremantle. Established in 2010, CH aims to build strong communities through co-operative living. Created to grow the rental co-op housing sector in WA, CH also provides management and support services to established co-ops.
Current Challenge
Growth over the past 16 years has been slow despite best efforts over that time. One new regional development is underway, an exciting project for the sector. However it has revealed managerial and governance issues that urgently need addressing to meet the expectations of the Regulator. CH needs Directors who can help to stabilise the organisation ready for new regional opportunities that are arising.
Core Business
- Manages 38 properties across 3 associations and 1 retirement village in Perth metropolitan area.
- Developing 23 co-located properties in Witchcliffe.
- Commencing feasability for developments in Manjimup with other regional opportunites arising.
Co-operation Housing is:
Registered as a Community Housing Provider (CHP) with the Department of Communities (WA).
Registered as a charity (public benevolent institution) with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC)
Endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) by the Australian Taxation Office.
About the Board
Co-operation Housing is a not-for-profit organisation governed by a Board of Directors who are responsible for the strategic management and financial performance of the organisation.
The Board is made up of 5 elected Directors, and 4 technical Directors.
Elected Directors are drawn from our member co-operatives and bring to the Board their experience of co-operative living, community values, co-operative leadership and skill and experience in the management, development and capacity-building of co-operatives.
Technical Directors are appointed to bring specific expertise to the Board in areas such as property development, financial management, law, planning, regulatory compliance and organisational leadership and development.
The Board may also convene subcommittees, for example, governance, development and growth.
Co-operation Housing''s Board meets at least monthly. CH also convenes general meetings for member co-ops, associate members and stakeholders.
Board Vacancies
Metro is seeking two skills‑based directors to join its Board for six months. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to community housing in WA and the ability to contribute to a values‑driven, purpose‑led organisation.
- Director – Human Resources (6 month position)
Skills and experience:
- Experience in HR, organisational development, employment law, or people leadership.
- Understanding of NFP governance, director duties, and boundaries between governance and management.
- Strong ethical judgment and commitment to safe, fair, and inclusive workplaces.
- CEO appointment, performance evaluation, succession planning, and remuneration decisions.
Desirable:
- Experience in community housing, social infrastructure, or not‑for‑profit governance.
- Director – Finance (6 month position)
Skills and experience:
- CPA or CA qualification
- Strong financial governance capability, including oversight of budgets, financial reporting, and risk management
- Ability to guide finance, audit & risk maangement and support the Board’s fiduciary responsibilities
Desirable:
- Experience in NFP, housing, community services, or regulated sectors.
